The biggest thing simplifying changed at home

A lot changed when I started simplifying at home. I spend less. The house is easier to clean. I have more time.

But the biggest change is harder to measure. I became calmer.

Less stuff means less noise

Before, I didn’t really think about how much attention everyday things were taking. Things to clean or put away. Things I bought impulsively. Things to maintain.

None of that felt like a big problem on its own. But together, it created noise. Once I started simplifying, some of that noise disappeared. Not all at once. And my house certainly didn’t turn into some perfectly organised minimalist space. There was simply less to deal with.

I spend less energy on things that don’t matter

One of the practical benefits is that I spend less money. I pay more attention to heating, food and the things I bring into the house. I’m less likely to spend money on something just because it might be useful one day.

That saves money, of course. But it also means fewer decisions and fewer things entering the house that I then have to deal with.

The same goes for cleaning and maintenance. With less stuff around, cleaning is easier. There’s less to move, less to organise and less to maintain.

Again, the real benefit isn’t only the time saved. It’s that there are fewer little jobs sitting somewhere in the back of my mind.

I know the important things are getting attention

There’s another reason I feel calmer now. Simplifying has made me much clearer about what actually matters. That means I spend more of my time and attention on those things.

And when I know the important things are being dealt with, I don’t have to worry as much about them going wrong because I was distracted by something less important.

That creates a different kind of calm. Not the calm of having nothing to do, but the calm of knowing you’re doing the right things.

More room in my day — and in my head

Simplifying also gave me more time. Less shopping. Less cleaning. Less organising. Less maintenance. That time you save can go towards things I actually care about.

But what surprised me most is that simplifying didn’t just create more space in my home or my diary.

It created more space in my head.

There’s less pulling at my attention. Less I feel I should be doing. And more confidence that the things that really matter are getting the attention they need.

And that’s probably the biggest reason I’ve kept going with it. Saving money is nice. Having a house that’s easier to clean is nice.

But feeling calmer because there’s less to deal with, and because I know I’m focusing on what matters? That has been the biggest improvement of all.
